Accessibility

Everything in CMB Maps works without motion, without sound and without colour vision. Every gesture also has a button, a menu item or a VoiceOver action, so nothing depends on a gesture alone.

VoiceOver

  • The whole sky is one element that tells you the layer, the view, the zoom and the colours. Its actions include Describe this view, Read the map at centre, zooming, moving, Fit and the next or previous landmark.
  • Double-tap to explore by touch: then one finger reads the map as it moves, two fingers move the map and pinching zooms.
  • The Places list in the panel, and the Landmarks rotor, take you to every landmark.
  • Readings are spoken in words, and a map’s warning is a swipe away in the More Content rotor. Describe this view gives the map, what is at the centre and the warmest and coldest (or brightest and faintest) spots in view, and it travels with every shared image as its description.
  • On the Card, swipe up or down to change the map; each new map is announced.
  • Without VoiceOver, the Speak button reads a reading aloud.

Switch Control, Voice Control and Full Keyboard Access

  • Switch Control and Full Keyboard Access reach the same actions as VoiceOver, and Auto plays the Card hands-free.
  • Buttons have names you can say with Voice Control, such as “Layer”, “Tilt” or “Close-up”.

No tilt needed

  • The slider, taps on either side of the map, the keyboard and VoiceOver do everything tilting does.
  • Tilt is on by default only on iPhone, and not with Reduce Motion; the Tilt button turns it off. Look around stays off until you turn it on, and you can always drag to look around.

Text and display

  • Text follows your text size up to the largest accessibility sizes. At those sizes the buttons keep their size and show their names when you touch and hold them, and a reading moves to a bar along the bottom of the sky.
  • Bold Text, Increase Contrast, Reduce Transparency and Button Shapes are respected. With Increase Contrast or Reduce Transparency, text sits on solid black with a border instead of translucent material.
  • Smart Invert leaves the maps and colour bars as they are, so their colours keep their meaning.

Motion

  • With Reduce Motion or Prefer Cross-Fade Transitions, movements become cross-fades. With Reduce Motion, tilt is also off until you turn it on.
  • The first time you open the Card on iPhone or iPad, it plays a short demonstration, never with Reduce Motion or VoiceOver. After that, nothing on the Card moves by itself: Auto plays only when you press Play.

Colour

  • Two of the five palettes, Cividis and Grey, are safe for colour-blind eyes, and they are listed right after the default.
  • Contour mode draws lines of equal value, one every 50 µK on temperature maps, and hatches the colder side, so the two sides can be told apart without colour. Filled-in areas are outlined and dotted.
  • The colour bar always shows its numbers. With Differentiate Without Colour on, the current map’s name on the Card is underlined and the slider’s thumb carries a mark.

Keyboard and pointer (iPad and Mac)

  • On iPad, hold the Command key to see the shortcuts; on a Mac they are also in the menus. Command with a number switches between Sky, Card and Learn. When the map has focus, the arrow keys move it; on the Card they step through the deck.
  • Press I for a crosshair with a live reading, Return to pin it and Esc to clear it.
  • With a pointer, hover over the sky to read it; trackpad scrolling moves the map and pinching zooms.

Sound and haptics

  • Nothing depends on sound. The sound at each map is off unless you turn it on, and haptics can be turned off; visual ticks show every step.
  • Short notes stay up long enough to read and are announced to VoiceOver.

Help and feedback

In the app, Learn › Help: VoiceOver & keyboard lists every shortcut and every VoiceOver action.
